Family

Often times, due to distance and circumstances, we're not able to be with our family. Today is one of those instances for me. A part of my family lives in North Carolina and Virginia, so I don't get to see them that often, but today I was able to wish a Merry Christmas to the family as they gathered for an annual Christmas breakfast, turned lunch (don't eat or much or those Christmas clothes won't fit!!).

So as promised, here's my "shout out!!"

My sister, Sharon (the one in the gift buying/giving mood-keep it up)
My niece, Jessica (who got her driver's license in November and is still excited about Christmas)
My Aunt Lois (who is looking forward to a return trip to DC)
My Aunt Lillie and Uncle Mott (the snow in a box is on the way)
My cousins, Rhonda (my computer buddy), Devonta (thanks for the cell phone passing), Marion (who is excited) and Denise (with her radio voice).

Picture Perfect-Again

This post was so well received last year that I had to share it again. Hopefully, you've completed all or the shopping you're going to do (don't overspend)!! Take the time to enjoy Christmas Eve.

You've decorated your house just the way you want it. B. Smith and Martha Stewart would be proud. Why not make it easier for next year? Take pictures of your rooms and use them as a road map for decorating next year. You don't have to follow the same plan each year, but wouldn't it be less stressful to have a guideline for next season? You can also make great Christmas cards by adding the pictures and a personalized note.

What Do You Hear?

Words hurt, I just wrote about that the other day. So having said that, do you think we are quick to label people? Often times, it's not in the most positive way either. In previous posts, I've admitted that at times, I am the most Pollyanna person you could ever meet. I have my moments. So when someone assigns a label to me and intends for it to be a negative one, I do my best to make it a positive label. If someone calls me ardent, I hear that I am passionate; call me lazy and I hear that I'm good at conserving energy; say that I'm stubborn and I hear that I'm just loyal to my cause. What do you hear when someone assigns a label to you?

The Blizzard of 2009-The Morning After

Well, to be truthful, by the time you read this post, it will actually be a couple of mornings after, but you get my drift. Ah, the break of day and mounds of snow to be shoveled-18 inches as measured by my trusty rulers (I needed two). If you recall (or you can simply revisit the post)http://preciousonesllc.blogspot.com/2009/03/snow-pics.html, I always prepare before a snowstorm by covering our metal steps and walkway in plastic and rugs to make snow removal easier. Well, this time was no different. A quick roll of the plastic and the removal of the rugs, and voilà, "easier" snow removal. I still had to work, 2.5 hours actually, but that included shoveling the sidewalk, two cars, returning all tools and accessories to their proper places and the time it took to regain the feeling in my toes!! Not really true on the toe thing, but imagine how much longer and harder it could have been. Enjoy!!

The Blizzard of 2009

If you've even remotely followed me, you are aware of my love of snow. Well, I can say that I experienced snow euphoria during the weekend!! The Blizzard of 2009 is not my title, but what all of the major news stations here in DC were calling this record snowfall (12-24 inches, depending on location). Sounds exciting, doesn't it? Well, it was!! I have some nighttime snow pictures taken December 19, 2009, to show you and hopefully will have some more to share. The white spots in the pictures-snow!! I loved it. Enjoy!!

Non-Productive Guilt

I consider myself a highly productive person, but I have to admit that there are just times when I don't want to do ANYTHING!! If you've read previous posts, you know that I am not a big fan of Mondays-the 2nd day of the week just isn't on my list of favs. I used to feel guilty for being just plain lazy on Mondays, feeling that I should be more productive. Well, I'm learning to get over it and I've decided that it works for me. What was I accomplishing by making myself feel badly for not doing more? Nothing positive, I can tell you. I'm generally highly productive (see I said so in the beginning of the post) the other days of the week, so I more than make up for a well-deserved-beginning-of-the-work-week-slow-down. Non-productive guilt, whatever it may be, doesn't do much to improve my life, so I'm choosing not to allow it. After all, there are too many other things in my life on which I could expend that energy. What about you?

Still Clutter

I know a man who has as many broken pieces of furniture and items as functional pieces. There's a knob missing from a drawer, a leg from a chair, or perhaps a handle from a mug or two. But if you ask him why he 's keeping all of that "stuff", he has what he considers a very rational answer, "I'm going to get it fixed." Here's my even more rational question, "When?" Maybe you have plans to get "stuff" fixed, throw it out or donate slightly used items and furniture, but until you do, it's still just clutter.

The past is gone. The future isn't here and when it is, it's the present. So, all you really have is the present. In which time frame will you choose to live?

Self View

What is your self-view? When asked to describe yourself, what words first come to mind? Are they mostly positive or negative? We all want to be liked and admired, if not that, at least respected. But if you harbor self-loathing thoughts, you project that to others and you can almost guarantee that you don't represent your most confident self. Take the time to create the best self-view-it's the one that matters most.

Round and Round

How would you describe someone who consistently exhibits the same behavior, but is surprised when they get the same response or outcome? Confused, misguided, uninformed or something else? Sadly, many of us live our lives based on this very premise (whether knowingly or not), and still expect a different outcome without a change in behavior. I liken it to riding on a merry-go-round and wondering why you're going in circles. For change to happen, behaviors must change.

Sticks and Stones

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." Do you remember the little ditty? How many of you sang this as someone hurled an insult at you while you were happily playing on the playground? It still amazes me that this phrase still lingers on today. It's an erroneous and delusional belief that words can't be used to ruin, destroy or harm someone. If not that injurious, words at least can affect how that person feels at any given moment. Oh, and this is just a little bonus for you adults out there-don't forget that children may listen and hear far more than you think they do. So be certain that the words you utter to, about and in front of those little (and not so little) impressionable ears are words you don't mind hearing repeated when you least expect it. Words are powerful, so make a conscious decision to use yours wisely.

Procrastination Buster-Time It!!

Have you ever timed yourself while performing a chore or task? It's a great motivator and a handy time management tool as well. For example, I folded a full load of clothes in less than two minutes, while microwaving lunch-two tasks for the price of one-SCORE!! I cleaned the bathroom in less than 30 minutes. And I mean a full cleaning, which included an on my hands and knees floor scrubbing, followed by mopping-hey, I like a clean floor, okay? Also included dusting (which I've shared with you that I despise with a passion), washing all bath linen, curtains and bath rugs (the actual washing/drying time was not included in the 30 minute frame, but the time to remove and take them to the laundry room was) and disinfecting all bath fixtures, tub/shower, walls, toilet and cleaning window and mirrors-I'm thorough, can't you tell? What's my point in telling you my laundry and bathroom stories? To let you see that there really is no need to procrastinate on completing tasks, especially if you are already aware of the time it'll take you to finish. If you only have an hour that day to accomplish chores or tasks, you'll know which ones you can reasonably expect to complete. That way you won't start, (but not finish) and become frustrated and totally avoid ever completing any task. Ready, set, time!!

Searching for Happiness

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.”-John Lubbock. How profound!! Our outlook can cloud our perception of our happiness. Our view of our past, current or future circumstances influences how we live our lives and whether we strive for happiness or accept unhappiness. While our circumstances may sometimes seem bleak, negative or even grim, remember that there is always hope and the opportunity for change. It’s okay to see and acknowledge your circumstances as they really are, but always seek to find the positives and that will ultimately decide the type of attitude you have.

System Failure?

I love routine. I value systems. But when something isn't working for me I want to improve it, alter it, redo it, rethink it, delete it, or simply put-change it. Those who stick with a system when even they know it is not effective, fascinates me. Here's an example: someone I've encountered (name omitted to protect the innocent) has a habit of putting trash/recycling into plastic bags and then hanging them on the doorknob of her front door. Her rationale is that if the bag is there, she'll remember to take it out and place it in the trash/recycle can. Great effort...few results. Many times, the bags simply multiply until she can no longer turn the knob of her door!! But she still thinks it's a working system. Look, I applaud effort, but when is the time that you decide that the system is just not working? This was a somewhat humorous example, but what if the faulty system you're using is impairing your function or endangering your life? Take the time to assess the systems in your life and decide which ones are working and which ones need to join those bags in the trash/recycle can. Dr. D. Clutter™

Complaints

Do you complain when you've received poor service? What about if you aren't satisfied with a product? If your cell phone company overcharges you, would you let it slide? Well, not me. Ask anyone who knows me-I can complain with the best of them. Now, I don't complain just for the fun of it; I have to have a valid reason. And if I must say, I'm quite good at it. Here a few tips to "proper" complaining:

• Always remain calm, professional and composed. Never yell or call the person on the other end anything but their given name-it goes a long way towards getting you what you want.


• Document, document, document. Always get the name and ID number of the person to whom you spoke.


• Note the time and date of your complaint.


• Note the proposed outcome the company has offered.


• Don't be afraid to ask for a supervisor if you're not satisfied with the first response.


• Follow up if you don't receive the proposed outcome.


• Only complain if the situation warrants. Don't do it just for fun. No one wins in that situation.

First to Last-Again

Can you believe it? One year ago, I posed this question to you: What things have you procrastinated about only to wake up and realize that the year is almost over? So, I thought it would be a hoot to revisit it and hear about all of the progress you've made since then. Did you notice how positive I phrased that last question? Of course, I could have asked if you were in the same place (or worse) than you were when we last visited this topic, but we're not going in that direction. Now, if you happen to be in that place, don't despair. You have multiple days for change in the last month of 2009-31 to be exact. So that you don't have to scroll or search for the original post, Here it is for your reading pleasure (and also to hopefully serve as motivation-if you need it!!). Go ahead, read and substitute 2009 for 2008 and blast full speed ahead into all that you need to accomplish.

It's the first day of the last month of 2008!! What things have you procrastinated about only to wake up and realize that the year is almost over? Go ahead, I'll wait because if you're like most, that list could get pretty long. No need to fret, however, because you can still accomplish some of those tasks. Prioritize and get that long "To Do" list down to a manageable size. Tackle the larger projects first and make sure you have a plan of attack. Write it down. More importantly, don't become discouraged and locked into a mind battle against time-you'll lose. Instead, take the position that there are only so many hours left that you have to work with and get started. Enjoy the journey.

Name Change

I love my name!! I thought it was such a clever representation of my life's goal and who I am. What do you see when you see Dr. D. Clutter™? My intentions were to convey that the "doctor is in" to help you overcome your life management issues, especially clutter and disorganization. The message has been received, but the name seems to be causing some confusion about what to call me. I have been called Dr. Clutter so many times, I've lost count!! Let's be clear-I am not a "doctor for the promotion of clutter"-I seek to eliminate clutter, thus the D. Clutter™ part of my name. So, to alleviate this often humorous, but erroneous interpretation, I have decided to,(DRUM ROLL, PLEASE) drop the period after the "D" and combine it with the word Clutter. Thus, from this time forward Dr. D. Clutter™ will no longer exist, except in those already published and public instances which I cannot change. I will now and forever be Dr. DClutter™. How amazing is it that the simple removal of a period would bring so much clarity? The moral of this little story? If there is any room for doubt or confusion, make a change!!

Toxic Friends

The telephone rings, you check the caller ID and decide not to answer. The doorbell rings, you look through the peephole and then pretend you’re not home. What do these two things have in common? You’re trying to avoid the person on the other end. Do you have someone in your life who is a toxic friend? You know the type; the person never has a good or positive word to say. The sun never shines in her life, so she’s always in a negative state of mind and wants you to join her. He never gets the “breaks” so every experience is a negative one and he wants you in that angry, dark place with him. She brings your joy quotient down every time you’re in her presence. He just exudes unhappiness and wants you to feel the same way. These are toxic people and you should avoid them at all costs. It’s our nature to want to help people feel better and that’s not a bad thing. The problem arises when you give so much of yourself to someone who willingly “takes” all that you have, but offers nothing to help you in return. They’re toxic and you should run the other way when they seek to pollute your day.

Procrastination versus Planning

In both procrastination and planning, you may delay accomplishing tasks, but in only one do you experience progress and success. With procrastination, you delay even planning an event or task, which robs you of your peace of mind, and almost guarantees a rise in your stress level. You’ll find that you expend as much energy avoiding as you would in actually performing the task. With planning, even if it’s a delayed plan, you’ve done the work, but don’t allow a plan to become procrastination by not following through. A plan without eventual completion (action) is simply procrastination in disguise.

Keep Your Word

“I’ll call you”, but you never call. “I’ll see you later”, but you never see them again. “I’ll help”, but you never lift a finger in assistance. These are simple phrases that many of us utter without thought that we’re making a promise. If you don’t intend on following through and honoring your word, don’t say it. It’s really a simple thing NOT to say what you don’t intend to do.

Thrill Seeker?

Do you appreciate the adventure of the unknown? Does your heart race at the thought of heading into a new day without any plans? Well, if so, this post is not for you. For the rest of you who find that living the life of the adventurer hasn’t been working for you, I suggest that you plan as much of your day the night before. I know it’s not as exciting as not knowing what the next adventure will be, but at least you’ll know what you’ll wear, eat and will prayerfully arrive on time.

Task Focus

What things, when you think about having to do them, cause the hair on your skin stand on end? Do you find that those are the things that you tend to procrastinate on completing? One way to get things accomplished is to focus on the task, not on the fear of completing the task. Break the task into manageable segments and focus only on that segment and see how successful you’ll become.

Resentment

If you’re holding a grudge, feeling resentment towards someone, chances are you’re feeling lousy. Further, chances are that the other person is just skipping happily down the boulevard while you’re sitting at home sulking and feeling badly. How many times have you heard that being angry with someone affects you more than it does the other person? Well, it’s true. Anger, resentment, grudges, and all other negative feelings are as if you are sipping from a time-release poison and then waiting for the other person to feel the effects. Doesn’t make sense does it?

You Choose

I wish I could take full credit for this little piece of inspiration, but alas it came from Monk, one of my favorite televisions shows. Randy, one of the characters said that despite people always teasing him, making fun of and often disrespecting him, that he viewed happiness as a choice. So, he chose to be happy despite his circumstances. I love that thought and live my life as close to it as possible. That doesn’t mean that sad days, disappointments and unhappy times don’t happen. It just means that I don’t allow those times to rule my life.

When?

If you’re like me, as a child, I attended Sunday School and heard many of the most popular biblical stories. There was always the story of how God created the world, man and woman and all living things. Then there was the story of how He instructed Noah to build an Ark and fill it with a pair of every species (yes, I’m skipping ahead). Well that story always started me to thinking. Was the Ark cluttered and too full? Probably not. After surviving a flood, man invented things (skipping again). Then he had to create places to store those things. Is that when the story turns and disorganization entered the world? I’m taking a great deal of creative license with this posting, but think about it and give me your thoughts.

Smile

I was watching a PBS special, "The Family That Walks On All Fours", about a family whose adult children walked on their hands and feet, as a child might, in a "bear crawl". I won't go into the specifics because you can easily research the show on the PBS website. The family had very little in the way of material possessions and had seemingly lived difficult lives, but what struck me was their tenacity and determination. The parents wanted the same things that parents all over the world want for their children-good health and happiness. What further struck me (and almost brought me to tears), were the smiles on the faces of the adult children. What a joy it was to see them smiling despite the adversity they faced. It's easy to smile when you're financially secure, have good health and most of your needs are met, but it takes a special person to smile, when from the outside it doesn't seem to be anything to smile about. I'll remember this family in those times when life has been unkind, things haven't gone my way and I'm tempted to pout or complain.

Adjust Your Focus

Have you ever looked through a camera lens and the picture looked blurry? Well, in that case, you'd simply readjust the focus and then take the picture, right? So, can't you learn to do that in life as well? You can train yourself to refocus your view, readjust your language, thinking or situation. If things don't look or go the way you want them, refocus your view.

Fair to Middlin'

I remember my grandmothers saying that they were feeling "fair to middlin'" when someone asked how they were doing. It always made me laugh. But on a more serious note, have you ever been in that place where you're not happy, but you're not sad either-you're stuck someone in the middle? You have to choose which emotion you will allow to rule. I'm not saying either is wrong, or better, but what I am saying is that you need to decide which will rule your life at that moment. Decide, deal with it and then move on.

Say What??

We've become so conditioned to repeating clichés and phrases without really giving much thought to the meaning of what we're saying. What does standing still feel like to you? I don't mean in a physical sense but as related to your life moving forward. To me it feels as if I've stagnated and that's not a great feeling. What things are holding you in a place where you don't want to be? Identify and rectify, then move forward.

Memories

When you have remembrances of your past, do you tend to focus on the negatives or the regrets? Don't!! Experiencing them once should suffice, so why put yourself through it twice? Fight the urge to revisit the negative events in your life unless it serves to help you in the present or the future. That doesn't mean that you won't have accurate memories of your past or that you'll "rewrite" your history. It just means you won't dwell on the negative.

Identification Necessary!!

The hardest part of change is starting. That might sound overly simplistic and obvious, but it’s not. Often we spend so much time in the planning stage that we never actually implement the actions. Planning is great, but if you find that you spend all of your time planning, but rarely accomplish your goals, take a step back and see if you’re avoiding change. Explore what’s holding you back. Is it fear, ignorance (not always a negative, just a chance to learn something new), or lack of the proper tools? Whatever the hindrance, identify it and work past it.

Procrastination is evil!! Okay, that may be a bit on the side of dramatic, but it probably got your attention and made you think about it. Procrastination doesn’t allow you to enjoy life’s precious moments because you’re too concerned about avoiding the present or worried about the past. It keeps you in a state of flux. That’s not a fun place to be.

Tug-of-War

Think back to the last behavior you wanted to either start or stop doing. How much time did you spend debating with yourself over whether you’d do it or not? Did you spend as much time physically trying to change the habit? Probably not. Self-debating, coupled with self-doubt are sure ways to defeat change. Work on conquering those and change is more likely to come. Of course, you have to have a sincere desire and will, paired with an honest effort and a great deal of actual work.

Lilacs

I was speaking on the phone today with my senior best friend, who is 96 years old. I was telling her of a "rough" patch I'd had that week and how it could have put a damper on and changed the path of my dreams. She told me that she only had one major dream in life-lilacs. "Lilacs", I asked, "what about them?" She said she'd always wanted a home with lilacs in the yard and around the fence; she never got them. I asked if that made her sad and she replied, "Just a little, but you have more time". I was floored. Here was a woman whose one dream was never realized and who could have become disillusioned and discouraged, but chose to go on. More than that, she was still a beacon of hope and encouraging me to pursue my dreams!! If you're not blessed to have a senior best friend like mine, encourage yourself or find someone who will encourage you to dream!! Never stop pursuing your Lilacs!!

The Psychology of Willy Wonka

I absolutely love Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the updated and very funny, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory too. I loved the last one so much that I used it as a part of a social psychology class that I taught. Seriously. The students were skeptical at first, but after viewing the movie and discussing the thought provoking questions I raised (yes, they were thought provoking), they fully understood and appreciated the lesson. Okay, that was not my reason for writing today, but this post was inspired by the first version of the movie. At one point in the movie, Willie Wonka says, "We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it". Wouldn't it be nice if the first part was true and we had all the time in the world to get all of the things we need done? Well, we don't, so make sure that you are a great task/time manager. Yeah, I know. I went a long way for this post, didn't I?

Pure Life

I honestly believe that I could glean inspiration and a life lesson from a rock (or in this case a label). There are two empty bottles of Nestle's Pure Life water beverages (Raspberry and Orange Splash, respectively) on my desk today (they are bound for the recycling bin). The labeling inspired me to think about if I was living my life in its purest form. Although I strive to have the best, most positive (there's that word again) and most fruitful (ha, a play on the label-I'm on a roll) experiences, I fully understand that circumstances and choices can bring adversity into life in an instant. The "trick" is to make certain that you don't remain in any place, situation or relationship that hinders you from living life in its purest form.

Positively Positive

I know that I focus on positivity a great deal, but the alternative is to focus on negativity and that's just plain old not fun. Here's a new way of thinking for you: Decide that you will remain positive until and unless you are forced to be negative. You will then make every attempt to prove that negative belief to be false. Yes, yes, I'm saying negativity is not allowed. Yes, yes, again, I could have just said that at first, but where's the fun in that?

Strive for Five

I love getting up and out early to exercise because the city is still quiet and peaceful. Since exercising alone is not the most exciting thing in the world, so I play a game while I'm out. I Strive for Five. No I don't mean fruits and veggies (although that's important too, but that's another post), I mean I strive to have at least five human interactions while I'm out. Sometimes it's a "good morning" or maybe a "hello". On occasion it's simply a smile and a nod (hey, it's hard to talk and run at the same time, so it's acceptable). Once in a while it's a wave or a nod of the head. Whatever the gesture, I strive for five. Of course you can strive for more, but at least challenge yourself to interact with at least five humans a day. Doctor's orders!!
